4D CINEMA MELBOURNE AQUARIUM
The Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium 4D Cinema is a 96 seat cinema featuring a custom made 'Ice Age' animated movie presented in high definition 3D projection and combined with in theatre special effects to further engage the audience.
Alasdair Macdonald Architects initially worked closely with UK based design architect Kay Elliot to produce a concept that was functional and compliant with local construction codes and standards.
Alasdair Macdonald Architects subsequently completed detailed design development, obtained the required building approvals nad coordinated the services and specialist consultants for construction of the project.
The project had two main challenges. Inserting such a large space within an existing building envelope required modifications to the Admissions and Retail Gift Shop as well as a rethink of the customer circulation through the facility while also maintaining operations throughout construction.
The cinema is also located directly beneath the main city rail lines of Melbourne which presented significant acoustic challenges that had to be overcome.
The 4D Cinema was successfully opened in September 2015.
